জামাল সাহেব, বয়স ৩০ বছর। পেশায় একজন দিনমজুর মানুষ। অভাবের সংসারে পরিবারের একমাত্র উপার্জনক্ষম ব্যক্তি ছিলেন তিনি। আয় রোজগারের জন্যে বিভিন্ন সময় তাকে বিভিন্ন ধরনের শারিরীক শ্রম দিয়ে কাজ করতে হয়। যার ফলে তার হাড় ও মাংসপেশির উপর প্রবল চাপ পড়ে।
হঠাৎ একদিন হাতে আঘাত পেয়ে তীব্র ব্যাথায় ছটফট করতে থাকলে এলাকাবাসী তাকে নিয়ে আসে প্রো- এ্যাকটিভ মেডিকেল কলেজ ও হাসপাতালে, ডা: ইমদাদুল হক ভূঁইয়া স্যারের কাছে। তার ব্যথার লক্ষণ ও গতিবিধি অনুযায়ী তার হাতের এক্স-রে করার পরামর্শ দেয়া হয়। এক্স-রের মাধ্যমে জানা যায় উনার বাম হাতের বাহু ও কনুয়ের মাঝামাঝি অংশের হাড় আড়াআড়িভাবে ভেংগে গেছে। যেটাকে বলে, oblique fracture of arm (left).
দিনমজুর মানুষগুলির জন্যে হাত অকেজো হয়ে যাওয়া মানে হলো গোটা দুনিয়া থমকে যাওয়া। কারণ, দুই হাতের উপরই নির্ভর করে তাদের পরিবার।
সাধারণত ২৫-৪০ বছর বয়সের পরে আমাদের শরীরের হাড় এমনিতেই দুর্বল হওয়া শুরু করে। এই সময় হাড়ের ক্যালসিয়াম ও ফসফরাসের মাত্রা ধীরগতিতে কমতে শুরু করে। তখন অতিরিক্ত ভার বহন বা চাপ সৃষ্টি হলে, অথবা injury or trauma এর ফলে হাড় ভিতর থেকে ভেংঙ্গে যাওয়া বা ফ্র্যাকচার হবার সম্ভাবনা থাকে।
জামাল সাহেবের ক্ষেত্রে তার আর্থিক দুরবস্থার কারণে ও শরীরের সঠিক যত্নের অভাবে হাড়ের গঠনমূলক বিকাশ অস্থিতিশীল ছিলো। ফলে কর্মক্ষেত্রে দূর্ঘটনার মাধ্যমে সহজেই হাড়ের উপর তীব্র চাপ সৃষ্টি হয়ে ওনার oblique fracture of arm (left) ধরা পরে।
এই ধরনের ট্রমাটিক ফ্র্যাকচার এর চিকিৎসা হলো- ওড়ীফ (ও-আর-আই-এফ) অপারেশন। ORIF কৌশলগুলি প্রায়শই গুরুতর ফ্র্যাকচারের ক্ষেত্রে ব্যবহার করা হয়। যেমন: কমিনিউটেড বা স্থানচ্যুত ফ্র্যাকচার বা এমন ক্ষেত্রে যেখানে হাড় অন্যথায় একা ঢালাই বা স্প্লিন্টিংয়ের মাধ্যমে সঠিকভাবে নিরাময় হয় না। এই ধরনের ORIF অস্ত্রোপচারের মাধ্যমে ভাংঙ্গা হাড়েকে ‘স্ক্রু এবং প্লেট’ বসিয়ে সঠিক জায়গায় স্থানান্তর করা হয়। এতে হাড়ের ফ্র্যাকচার দ্রুত গতিতে জোড়া লাগতে সক্ষম হয়। সফলভাবে অস্ত্রোপচারের পর এই ব্যাথা সেরে উঠতে মোটামুটি ৩ মাস বা তার চেয়ে কিছু কম-বেশি সময় লাগতে পারে।
জামাল সাহেবের এলাকার মুরুব্বিগণ চাঁদা তুলে তাকে পাঠিয়ে দিলেন সহকারী অধ্যাপক ডা: ইমদাদুল হক ভুইয়া, যিনি MBBS ও MS (ortho) ডিগ্রি সম্পন্ন, স্যারের কাছে। অল্প খরচে যেন চিকিৎসাটা সুসম্পন্ন হয় সেটাই ছিল তাদের চাওয়া। ডা: ইমদাদুল হক ভূঁইয়া স্যার তার সততা ও নিষ্টার মাধ্যমে অতি দক্ষতার সাথে তার সহকারীদের নিয়ে কয়েকদিন আগে ওনার হাতের ভাংগা হাড়কে মুখোমুখি করে ‘ প্লেট এন্ড স্ক্রু’ লাগিয়ে অপারেশন সম্পন্ন করেন। ‘আলহামদুলিল্লাহ’।
আশা করা যায়, জামাল সাহেবকে দেয়া পরামর্শ অনুযায়ী সঠিক পরিচর্যা ও নিয়ন্ত্রিত জীবনযাপন করলে খুব দ্রুততার সাথে তিনি স্বাভাবিক জীবনে ফিরতে পারবেন ইনশাআল্লাহ। এর জন্য সম্পূর্ণ প্রশংসার দাবিদার স্যার ডা: ইমদাদুল হক ভূঁইয়া। বর্তমানে তিনি National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedic Rehabilitation (NITOR) এর সহকারী অধ্যাপক হিসেবে কর্মরত আছেন।

Mr. Jamal, aged 30, is a daily wage worker by profession. He is the sole earning member of his family living in financial hardship. Due to the lack of resources, he often engages in various physical labor tasks, which has led to significant strain on his bones and muscles.
One day, while experiencing severe pain and discomfort in his hand after an injury, he was taken to Pro-Active Medical College and Hospital, to Dr. Imadadul Haq Bhuiya, an orthopedic surgeon. After examining his symptoms and medical history, an X-ray revealed an oblique fracture of his left arm.
For individuals like Mr. Jamal who rely heavily on their hands for their livelihood, a fractured arm means a halt to their daily activities, impacting not only their lives but also their families’ well-being.
Typically, after the age of 25-40, our bones start to weaken gradually due to a decrease in calcium and phosphate levels. When subjected to extra pressure or trauma, fractures or cracks in the bones can occur, as in Mr. Jamal’s case.
In Mr. Jamal’s case, due to his financial constraints and lack of proper care for his bone development, his bones were more vulnerable to fracture. Therefore, even a minor accident at work resulted in a severe fracture of his arm.
The treatment for such traumatic fractures often involves ORIF (Open Reduction and Internal Fixation) surgery. ORIF procedures are commonly used for severe fractures where traditional methods like casting or splinting are ineffective. In this procedure, screws and plates are used to realign the broken bone properly, allowing for rapid healing. Successful surgery followed by proper rehabilitation can take around 3 months or more for the pain to subside and normal function to be restored.
Mr. Jamal’s well-wishers raised funds and took him to Assistant Professor Dr. Imadadul Haq Bhuiya, who is highly skilled in orthopedic surgery, for his operation. With minimal expenses, the treatment was successfully completed, thanks to Dr. Imadadul Haq Bhuiya’s expertise and dedication.
It is hoped that with proper care and controlled living, Mr. Jamal will soon return to normal life, by the grace of Almighty. Dr. Emadadul Haque Bhuiya’s expertise and commitment deserve full praise for this. Currently, he serves as an Assistant Professor at the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedic Rehabilitation (NITOR).
